Let’s Talk Fails

Not everything I make works out.  Sometimes it does not fit right, sometimes the sewing does not go right, sometimes the fabric fails me or the pattern.  Fails are a terrible part of sewing.  They happen, but nobody likes it when they do.  The only good part about a sewing fail is that I learn each time. I thought I would catch up my August sewing and share some of the fails I’ve had this month.

Simplicity 1068

Remember when I made my awesome Cheetah ruffle skirt?  I love it to pieces and said I would try some of the other views of the same pattern.  So I did. And it was not love.  I decided to go with the circle skirt, view C, knee length.  Circle skirts are easy to sew, though they take up a ton of fabric, and this pattern is just a knit circle skirt with an encased elastic waistband.  I picked up 2 yards of black and 2 yards of gray fabric to give it a try.  I used size 16 waist to 18 hip.  This is my waist size, but 1 size less than my hips.

This is the gray skirt (my shirt is a Renfrew I made in March)

The pattern instructions are very easy to follow if you’ve never sewn a circle skirt.  I have sewn a few for Miss K so I did not need them.  I sewed both these up in no time.

1gray

The fabric is a bit of a story.  I am on a ton of Facebook groups for fabric, patterns, sewing in general, etc. and many sewists were talking about how Walmart is now carrying knit fabric.  I popped into mine the end of July and sure enough they had a few bolts.  The gray is a super soft “Pontiroma,” a poly blend, lighter than Ponte, but a nice weight.  I purchased 2 yards for $10.88 total.  I love this fabric and will probably buy more.  It would make a great Lady Skater dress or knit pants. It is of medium weight and has decent stretch.  The black is Cotton Spandex Knit and is nice and thick compared to most Cotton/lycra (spandex) that I purchase online.  It has great stretch and recovery.  I purchased 2 yards for $11.96 total.  *On a side note, the lady had no idea how to cut knit fabric.  She gave me the most jagged crazy cut edge I’ve ever had on a piece of fabric.

And this is the Black Skirt
1black

The gray skirt has more drape to it and thus turned out better looking than the black skirt.  I will keep the gray one but I don’t know how much use it will get.  The weight of the black one makes it feel frumpier to me.  I don’t know how to explain it but it does not hang right.  I don’t care for it at all and will chop it up into underwear as soon as I get time.

My little helper wanted to be picked up constantly today (his kids, K &T, are gone so he is super needy)

I have decided that circle skirts just are not for me, at this length anyway. I would, however, recommend both of the Walmart knits (for appropriate projects of course).

Next up is a Burda skirt that I had really high hopes for.   Burda 03/2013 #122
03-2013-122

Every summer I go through a Maxi skirt obsession.  This skirt appealed to me but I did not have that issue so I had to buy the skirt via PDF version online for $5.90.  It comes with the skirt pieces for design #120, 121, 122, and 123.  The directions, however, are only for the number you purchase.

1skirtfail

This skirt is unique to sew because it has an invisible side zipper that is attached to the pocket bag.  It was challenging and frustrating.  I goggled and read up on how to attempt this feat.  It took 3 unpicking’s before I was satisfied with it.

See how the zipper comes down and it's attached to the pocket bag. . . crazy!

The skirt has a yoke and then the two lower rectangles, as well as pockets on the side seams.  I sewed the lower part with just one fabric, omitting the bottom “ruffle” layer.  I underlined with a very soft and light cotton muslin.  When I finally finished I tried it on and was sorely disappointed.  The pockets and gathering at the hip made me feel ginormous.  I ended up ripping out the zipper and omitting the pockets before closing it all up again.  I still feel 100 pounds heavier when I put it on, it is not a good look for me.

2skirtfail

My instincts told me that gathers by my hips are a big no-no for a pear shape like me; I should have listened to my gut. The pattern makes a really awesome skirt, it was just a style mistake for me (being so hippy).  Boo.

3skirtfail

The instructions for this skirt are typical Burda – little bits and pieces but no real help.  I utilized my stash of sewing books and the internet to sew it up.  The inseam pocket/invisible zipper part was terrible.

4skirtfail

The fabric is amazing.  I’m sad I cut it up.  It is a Muted Navy/Beige/White Dappled Leaves Cotton Lawn from FabricMart.  I purchased this in May 2014, 3 yards for $16.17 total. I love it too much to part with it so I will salvage what I can from the lower half rectangle.  Expect to see it again sometime!

Continuing with my Back to School preparations, I made up a bunch of underwear the last few weeks, too.  Miss K will no longer wear store undies so I re-stocked her drawer with

I mass produced 6 pairs in 2 days.  The coverstitch binder attachment helped tremendously, though I will think ahead of time next time and use the same color bands on all pairs.  It was a pain to change thread colors so much!  My coverstitch is super picky and I have to re-thread from the beginning every time I need to change colors.  The fabrics are all scraps from previous makes.  Miss K was super happy to see some of her favorite fabrics.

Not wanting Mr. T to feel left out I tried a new boxer pattern for him.  It is the Boxerwear pattern from Stitch Upon A Time.  *Also referred to as SUAT for short*  I used the XS size for him with the long length.  They fit him great, but the length is a bit long for his shorter body (It’s a men’s pattern).  Next time I will use the shorter length for him.  Fabric is also scraps from his other makes.  The seams on the inside of the “pouch” are enclosed (there is a lining and an outer fabric) so they are very soft inside. Mr. T did not want to take them off...

Mr. SunnySewing also got to try some new boxers from the same pattern.  His are a size XL and fit great (below on the Left with the fly).  They also have a boxerwear pattern for Women, so of course I made myself some in a size M at the waist to L at the hip.  They are super comfy to wear.  I can’t wait to make more!

IMG_3751

I popped out a tiny pair in XXS for Miss K but they were too small for her.  She also declared she would never wear “man” underwear so I won’t attempt any more for her.  They are super cute though! The fabric is from scraps from her previous shirt.

I also wanted to share this crazy picture. I was bit by an ant 2 weeks ago and I had to deal with this monstrosity for almost 2 weeks!! I almost gnawed my leg off it itched SO bad! I mean really, who reacts like this to a tiny ant!!  Actually, I itch again just looking at it. Sigh. It's better now, just a shadow of this.

Skulls and Rainbows

Mr. T makes an appearance.  Poor kid hasn't had anything made for him since the very beginning of January.  I got this awesome skull fabric and wanted to do teal sleeves to match, but T decided he wanted black sleeves. I explained that it gets hot in summer and black is not the best, but he was adamant.

Ottobre 03/2013 #39 Beisbol Raglan T-shirt

Size: 152 - T's measurements were just under this, and it fits perfect.

Fabric: 1 yard skulls fabric from purpleseamstress $10; a wonderful cotton/lycra.  The black is scraps left over from my lady skater also a cotton/lycra.

Instructions: I didn't use them. Sorry, lol.  This is the second time I've made this top for T, the first time was in August 2013 and I had no problems with the instructions.

Great T-shirt, great fabric, happy kid, happy mom.

And on to Miss K, who always gets new things.
Ottobre 06/2013 #26 Pumpkin Pie Jersey Dress
This is an instance where I got great fabric, had an awesome idea in my mind, and then when I made the dress it wasn't exactly as I envisioned.  But, surprisingly, Miss K is in love with it.

I've made this pattern 3 times now. The first being the Oranges dress in March 2014; the second being the cheetah dress in November 2014, and now the Rainbow dress.

I actually used the pattern skirt as it calls for with the different panels.  As you can see I did a rainbow around it.  The bodice I left as one fabric, not 2 like the pattern.  And I made the sleeves short because it is getting to be summer.

Size: straight 146, fit: great, although a bit short. Instructions are great, but I didn't use them.
Fabric: cotton/lycra for the plain colors.  Some from purpleseamstress, and some from fabric.com (Laguna, Kaufman) I could tell that the purpleseamstress is much better quality.
The bodice is luscious poly jersey from a facebook group "cuddle muffins".  It is called Shattered Showers and was $21 a yard.... yes, you read that right.  But it is amazing and K had to have it.  I used very little here for the bodice so expect to see this print again as I hoarded away 2 yards.

I had made up these yellow leggings to go under the dress, but K had her own thoughts on what she wanted to wear as leggings.

Ottobre 04/2013 #30; size 152 width and 146 height.  Fabric: purpleseamstress, yellow. This and the dress used up the 1 yard at $6.50.  These are just below the knee at capri length.

The Girl Who Needed Shorts

We all try to prepare for back to school.  We go through clothes, make lists or mental notes on what is needed.  We get things on the list school sends home.  The big day comes when school starts and everyone is excited.

I plan outfits each Sunday for the whole week.  We have one of those shoe things that hang in the closet -

works perfect for organizing kids clothes.  Monday (Labor day) I realized that Miss K doesn't have any shorts that fit for the week of school and she is not wanting to wear a skirt or dress.  Couple all this with the sweltering heat we are getting and the fact that the schools here do not have air conditioning.... recipe for disaster.

All my sewing plans for the week were put on hold to remedy this issue.  In the midst of many doctors appointments, a dentist appointment and homework this week, I sewed shorts.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, shorts.  One pair each day.  K came home and wrinkled her little nose at each one.  She is in a mood lately; very picky about clothing.  2nd grade can be tough I guess.

So here is the lineup of what I think are cute shorts.

1st pair:
Pattern: Jalie 3243 with modified pockets to in-seam. Used "showed facing" view.
Fabric: A cotton sateen floral print with a bit of stretch. Came from my mom who made a sundress that no longer fits.  I cut it up :-)
Cost: Free

2nd pair:
Pattern: Jalie 3243 with modified pockets to in-seam. Used "hidden facing" view.
Fabric: 1 yard very soft 21 wale corduroy from fabric.com "Kaufman 21 Wale Cool Cords Retro Bloom Flame"; scraps for facing and pockets from "Once Upon a Time Bugs Blue"
Cost: $6.44

3rd pair:
Pattern: Modified from Ottobre 03/2012 #29 (seen below). I traced out a size 146 for K.  I measured down 5 inches for inseam on front and back.

Fabric: A soft, thick knit. I think it is a double knit? Not too sure. We'll stick with mystery knit. It behaved and sewed very nicely.  A fabric I picked up from Hancocks about 2 years ago.
Cost: Unknown

and 4th pair:
Pattern: Same as above, modified Ottobre 03/2012 #29
Fabric: A cotton jersey t-shirt I cut up that no longer fit me.
Cost: Free
The bow is decorative and serves no function. I interfaced and put in buttonholes. Then I attached ribbon to each side of the shorts on the elastic side - this is before I fold the elastic over.  I then flipped the elastic down and sewed as usual.  I made the bow and sewed down the center so it won't come undone.

Hopefully this will tide K over until the heat breaks.

And now back to some me sewing!!!

Ottobre 03/2013 #39 Beisbol Raglan T-shirt

I promised Mr. T I would make him this shirt and it sat for 2 weeks on my table. I have no excuse really.  I wanted to sew it but yet I just didn't feel like it too.  T never asks for me to sew him anything, yet he is so excited when I make him things.  He is a funny kid.

He actually picked out this fabric from the $3.95/yd table a few weeks back.  It is 60 wide and I still have enough left for either a tee for me or leggings for Miss K.

Anyway, this is Ottobre 03/2013 #39 Beisbol Raglan T-shirt in size 146

Mr. T wears a size 10 in RTW but he is skinny; most RTW is very baggy on him width-wise.  So for this shirt I actually had T try on his sister's rainbow shirt (lol, poor kid) and it fit well, but was a bit short.  I traced and cut a 146 for him but added an inch to the length.

I added only 1/4" seam allowances because I knew I would use my serger for all the seam construction.  I did stitch over the serger seams on the armpits for added strength.

I top-stitched the sleeve cuffs and neck.  I used my stretch double needle with wonder tape for the bottom hem.

bottom hem

my new labels! yay!

This tee went together fast and without much issue.  The only snag I ran into was when I came to the neckline binding.  It looked so small, like a cuff.  I went and re-cut the pattern piece on the fold, thinking I forgot to do that, but then it was way too big.  So I measured the neck opening (17in) and multiplied it by my usual 0.75 for neck binding to come up with 12.75; add 0.5 seam allowance total (1/4  for each side) and I cut my binding at 13.25.  I measured this up against the original pattern piece and it was only about an inch longer. Shrug.  I sewed it on thinking it would be too small for T's head to fit through but it turned out just fine.

I tried my very best to line up the stripes.

Likes:
fits T perfectly
fast to sew
doesn't take much yardage - I'd say 1/2 yard of 60" wide
looks cute

Dislikes:
none!

T is over the moon happy with it

This is a great pattern.  It also has a variation of a polo tee.  I'm sure we will keep this in the "it works" pile for awhile.

Ottobre 03/2013 #33 ~ Chica Ciclista Leggings

With school fast approaching K needed some basics sewn for her.  She wears a lot of the skirts and dresses I make for her and thus needs leggings under them especially on gym days.

I originally traced and sewed this pattern in a size 152 here but it was way too big and the rise too high.  This time I measured the pattern pieces against K's own measurements for her hips and settled on size 140.  She wears an 8/10 in RTW and these leggings need negative ease.

I made the pink shorts version first and folded 1" out of the rise (1/2 inch fold = 1 inch out).  The shorts fit perfect size wise but were just a tad too low-rise in the waist.

Next I made the pink wild longer leggings - these end up at Capri length - I took the fold out of the rise and left it as the pattern is.  I actually used some old pajama pants of mine in a loose rib knit.  These fit great all around except the legs were a bit loose (I chalk this up to the ribbing material).

Finally, I sewed the Capri length out of the softest blue and white polka dot knit.  These were perfect size all around.  I love how they look under K's owl dress I sewed for her last October.  These are by far my favorite.

I'm so glad I found the size I wanted and can vary the lengths as needed.  When we were at the store yesterday I asked K if she wanted me to buy her some leggings and she replied "No, I like the ones you make better, they are more comfortable."  Win for mom!

(we live close to a military base and have fly-overs everyday - fun for us to see, not fun for the puppy who doesn't like the noise - they come quite low).

Breakdown:
Pink Shorts on top - 1/2 yard of Stretch Jersey Knit Solid Bright Pink (96% Rayon 4% Poly) $1.50Wild Pink Capri length - 1/2 yard of stretchy ribbing from old pajamas $ freeSoft light blue and white polka dots - 1/2 yard Rayon Blend Jersey Knit Pin Dots Aqua/White $1.62 (bought from my first order from Fabric.com back in Jan 23, 2012!)

TOTAL for 3 leggings: $3.12 - Way better than buying them for $6 a piece at Wal-mart in boring colors!
