Oliver + S Hopscotch Skirt

I have been busy, busy, busy. I have really cleaned up my sewing room.  I sold another 18 yards of fabric and 11 pounds of scraps!  Whew.  I am re-arranging for a reason....... I bought a cover stitch machine. Eeek! I'm so excited and she will be here Friday.... my birthday! Yay!  What better than to spend my day trying out my new machine.  I debated heavily between the Coverpro and the Brother. In the end the Brother won.  I want to see how much I will use it before spending a ton of money.

Anyway.  I started this Oliver + S skirt for K at the beginning of March.  All that was left for the last week or so was the top button. LOL.  What a procrastination.  K and I used snaps down the front instead of buttons, but opted for an actual button for the waistband.  I didn't want any snap popping open there.

This is a yard of stash fabric I used too!  Michael Miller Happy Hills. I purchased this last March for $8.98 from fabric.com.  The cute yellow pockets are from flannel scraps.  The cotton is a bit stiff for this skirt but I've only pre-washed it so far.  K is developing a few rounder areas lately, namely her rear end and her tummy.  She insists on the skirt sitting below her belly button, but then it rides up her swayback.  Knits fit her much better but I have so much cotton to use up.

Sewing this pattern was fun.  Oliver + S always have great instructions.  The measurements put her in a size 12 width and 10 length but it is clearly too wide and too long.  I think a 10 width and 8 length would have been about right.  I guess to me it looks cuter on the pattern envelope and the hanger.  Love those pockets though!

March Totals:
Stash used: 1 yard
Fabric Out: 19 yards + 11 scrap pounds
Fabric In: 5 yards

Totals for the year to date:
Stash sew this year: 14 yards
Fabric out in 2014: 73 yards!
Fabric in 2014: 60 yards

  1. What a cute little skirt! I really like the pocket detailing.

So excited to read about your coverstitch! I've been drooling over the Brother for months now -- I'm sure I'll eventually get one. :)

  3. Love this skirt! I have never seen pockets like this before. It would be worth me buying just for that! LOL Enjoy your new machine. I love sewing machines. I swore my Janome would hold me over for a very long time, but now I have my eye on another Pfaff. I guess it comes with the addiction. :)

    1. Oh, and are the snaps hard to do? I haven't done that on a garment before. Do you have a special tool for that or does it come in the package with the snaps like covering buttons?

    2. Thanks Shirley :D The pockets have a funky look to them but then you take side one and dart it in a sense over to the middle-ish, then dart side two over the top of it. The top edge is encased in bias tape. :D After you do it you realize how easy it is, but at first glance it looks somewhat complicated.

Oh yes, I'm always looking at machines! It's definitely an addiction!

    3. Oh! The snaps. I was having such a hard time before because my crappy Dritz pliers and snapsetter wouldn't work right. I ordered the Prym pliers from Wawak.com (they are marked as snap repair kit) They work like a DREAM!!! seriously. Whew. They don't hurt my hands and the snaps are foolproof. You should invest. I think they were like $30 and come with coat snaps, jersey, camping, and eyelets as well as the attachments for them. I then ordered colored snaps from Snapsetter in size 16 - they fit perfectly.

  4. K's new skirt is very pretty. Of course the pockets are really special! They are the kind of detail I could see looking great on an adult garment too.

  5. Yay on your new coverstitch and happy birthday a day early! I'm sure you'll get lots of use out of it. Mine's a brother, too, and I've been happy with it.

The skirt is cute and the fabric is really fun. Gotta use up those kid prints before they get too old. That's my philosophy anyway. I don't really want to be sewing them for my grandkids!

    1. Thanks Joy - I'm so glad to hear you are happy with yours :)
Yes, those kid prints look so cute and they multiply so fast! I've been trying to buy only knits lately and not cottons but the designs... they get me every time ;-)

  6. Happy Birthday and I hope you enjoy your cover stitch. i have mixed feeling about mine but it is all my own fault. I just need more practice.

Its a fun skirt, probably more suited to be worn at her waist but I know Elsa used to pull hers down to her hips too.
