Ottobre 01/2011 #33 "Meet-up T-shirt tunic"
Size 146 - omitted the front placket because I don't have time for those things ;-)
Instructions: are great. They are typical Ottobre - short and to the point
Fit-wise it fit just like it was supposed too. It is a tunic so it hits at the hip
(excuse the sun spot - it's that time of day)
Fabric: Top- Kaufman Laguna Stretch Jersey Knit Hot Pink that I got on sale for $2.99/yard at fabric.com. I don't remember how much I used but we will say 3/4 yard because of the sleeves. and Frozen 100% cotton woven. 1/2 yard? I think. $4.10. Total for the top: $6.34
It took me 2.5 hours to sew because I had to switch out thread colors, change up my serger to do the rolled hem, and I used 4 of my machines in different spots on here. K hates it. Like really hates it. She picked it apart for all of 10 minutes and I know she won't wear it. The "ruffly" part is gross (the rolled hem), the material is scratchy, it's too long (like a tunic), I don't want it.
Can I pull my hair out now? Then she and I get into the talk of how I don't want to sew her things anymore because she complains so much about them. To this she cries and says she still wants things from me. But I'm at my "fed up" point. So Black Friday comes along. I buy some clothes for K - cheap crap that is poorly made but name brand nonetheless. She hates them. Too tight, not long enough, too long. Then she realizes I sew for her because things FIT her. Store clothes don't FIT her!! All is well in the world again. LOL.
This top, however, is going to the boneyard, never to be loved by K. (aka. goodwill).

Cut the bottom off and make her a little pillow! One of my girls loves to have pillows everywhere. Even though it is scratchy, it will still look pretty. Of course, nothing beats that feeling of tossing it in the trash can when you are fed up! Ask me how I know ;) It is a very cute looking top though. I'd say I would try it, but our girls sound too much a like with their "dislikes" so I probably won't. lol Oh, and I have been there with store bought stuff. This same daughter of mine with try on something and say she likes it and then it gets tossed in the drawer never to be worn. When I ask why, she says "it doesn't feel right, it is scratchy, blah, blah, blah. I say, "why did you have me buy it then?" ARGHHH
ReplyDeleteShirley, that the thing that gets me too! "why did I buy it" sigh. I keep telling the kids if they don't like something don't let me buy it!! haha. I thought it was a cute top but my ideas and K's are way different. I should ask her from now on before I try to "surprise" her. Thanks Shirley!
DeleteI can relate! I stopped sewing for my daughter when she was around 7/8 because it was frustrating making something that I loved but she wouldn't wear. Somehow when she became a teenager that changed. I think it was because she wanted to learn to sew herself (we started out with bags), and also I realized that for her to wear it, it had to be her idea: i.e., she chose a pattern or fabric. I still retained veto power ;) if the idea was really not going to work. She is 18 now and we are still collaborating. Sometimes we have wadders, but both of us are continuing to improve our skills, and sewing has become something we share together.
ReplyDeleteThanks Angela! I am glad I'm not alone and that she may come back to me in a few years :) I like to make things for her and I'd be sad if I had to stop. I think I should follow your idea and get her more involved. Thanks!
DeleteSo sorry the tunic didn't get loved..[so no this feeling..both kids and grandkids.ha]..But, just think..some kid at the thrift store, will be thrilled to find it..So you made some one happy.lol
ReplyDeleteI saw this fabric at Joanns...It was very disappointing.. Very scratchy.
Proud sewing for daughter has made compromise.. I love seeing the cute things you make for her.
Thanks Judy! I really hope some little girl likes it :) It would be a shame for it to go to waste. It shocks me how some fabric can be so terrible and others so wonderful even though they are the same cotton woven!
DeleteThe top is so cute! Sorry to hear it wasn't a hit with your daughter! I know that feeling because I sew for my little sister. She's turning 12 soon and she will give me her opinion of things I make for her. I made her a Christmas dress once and even though she wore it she complained that it was too scratchy. Oh well. She is learning to sew now too and asks for my help, so that makes me happy! :)
ReplyDeleteAw, K likes to complain on the scratchiness too. I tried switching to softer thread too but she still complains ;) It is so cool she is learning to sew now!
DeleteOh, that is so frustrating - and a feeling I know well! Kids are so individual in taste and sensory preferences. So while it'd be nice to know what I make for my oldest girl will work for the younger two, it rarely works out that way. One will wear only nightgowns; two will wear only pj pants. etc.etc. But she'll get better and better at pinpointing styles and fabrics she wants. And you'll get better at knowing what'll work. I send my duds to Good will, too. Somebody should appreciate them. I wonder what Goodwill folks think of homemade clothes?
ReplyDeleteIt would be frustrating to not be able to pass down makes too! you are right, I need to find out what she wants and what her style is. Too often I make what I think she will like without her input. I've seen handmades at Goodwill, they make me smile :D
DeleteThanks Joy!
