More shorts Jalie, SUAT, P4P, and That Moxie Girl

Time to catch up on more makes I didn’t get blogged.  Here are a few shorts I’ve made over the years (all the way back to 2014!) that I didn't have the time to get blogged before.

Pattern: Prefontaine Shorts by “That Moxie Girl” prefontaine

Date made: waaaaay back in 2014! Mar 19, 2014

My measurements in 2014 were 37-29-44

Size and Alterations made: I cut a straight 14 with no alterations

Fabric: Floral Cotton Woven, just a regular quilting type cotton fabric. This cotton was a little bit lighter weight than a heavy quilting cotton.

Thoughts: I see that this pattern is still being sold on her etsy store.  At the time I thought they were a bit big on me.  But me in 2022 would totally wear these.  I love the binding detail on them and I think they are really cute shorts.  I no longer have them because my size has changed so much over the years. But I would totally make another pair of these. Plus these are made from woven fabric and I rarely use woven and have so few woven patterns to use up the fabric in my stash. Pattern: Jalie 2445 20160626_153026

Date made: 06/26/2016

20160626_152758

My Measurements in 2016 and 2017: Waist 30, Hip 45

Size made: X with a ton of alterations.

20180913_110615

Alterations made:  On the backs I took 5/8” off the outer waist and 1/4” at center waist.  I added 1/2” to the outer hip but took away 1/2” on the butt scoop.  I then added 2.5” to the hem.

20180913_110627

To the fronts I did the same on the waist, but for the hip I added 1/4” to outer and took in 1/4” on inner crotch scoop.  I also added 1/2” to the front thigh.  My notes say I added 1” total to thigh, 0 total to hip, and removed 1.75” from total waist. Whew, that’s a mouthful.  Let’s get a visual drawing for that.  (yes, I’m slightly crazy sometimes with trying alterations).

My size has changed so much and they are just too tight on me now (pic above from 2021).  I made the black pair 01/28/2017

Fabric: Random French terry scraps I had laying around from other projects.  Hot Pink French terry, and also black French terry

20170128_203921

Thoughts:  I keep trying with this pattern to get it right.  I want to get it right.  I love the look of the pattern.  The pink pair fit pretty good, but my size has changed, I got paint on them, and I no longer know where they even ended up.  The black pair I think is in my “too small” bin. So I can’t even wear them.  They are just too tight for me now. I have tried this pattern so many times my eyes have crossed and I had to walk away.  I am on muslin #8 for the full pants, besides making these 5 other times as shorts. Someday…….. someday I’ll get it worked out.

Made before: Apr 2016 a red pair, and a purple pair for Miss K, May 2017 black and white pair for me. Pattern: Stitch Upon A Time (SUAT) Women’s Boxerwear 2018 jul suat boxerwear me

Date made: 07/21/2018

My Measurements in 2018 were: Bust 36, Waist 29, Hip 43  (I had lost quite a bit of weight at this time).

2018 jul suat boxerwear me 2

Size and Alterations made: I cut a size Large on these with a medium waistband.

Fabric: Aqua Cotton Lycra purchased from Purpleseamstress on August 02, 2017 for $6.50 a yard.  These don’t even use a yard.

2018 jul suat boxerwear me 1

Thoughts: Well as you can see they are too tight for me here.  I needed to size up.  I love the fabric, I like the pattern.  I’ve made another pair before that fit and I wore them quite often, until my size changed and now they don’t fit either. I love the reverse coverstitching I took the time to do on this pair.  I will definitely be making myself more of these.  This pattern is so comfortable to lay around the house in or wear under dresses so my thighs do not rub.

Made before: Aug 2015 (near the bottom of the post) in black and blue stripe. Pattern: P4P Palazzos 20190331_160050jul 8 2017 p4p palazzos

Date made: 03/31/2019  Floral Pink and Blue and 07/08/2017 Black Heathered Stripe

20190331_160442

My measurements in 2019: 39 bust, 31.5 waist, 46 hip

My Measurements in 2017: Waist 30, Hip 45

20190331_160408

Size and Alterations made: Size L at the waist to XL hips down.  I also scooped out 1/2” from the back butt curve

20190331_160428 Fabric: The ITY Floral blue and pink (made in march 2019) is “Watercolor Floral Print ITY” from FabricMart, purchased July 2015, $4.50/yard.   I used scraps from my wrap dress made in Sept 2015.  I absolutely love this fabric and will hoard my last bits and scraps as long as I can!  (made in july 2017) black fabric is a scrap from the failed mcccalls nightgown from June 2017. It is a space dye knit with no real stretch, though it was listed as having ample stretch.  Its soft and flowy. Black/Grey Slubbed Jersey Knit 95% rayon 5% lycra. I purchased it from FashionFabricsclub in Aug 2016 for $3.95/yard.  It is just bad fabric, plain and simple.  2 makes both a fail….. bad fabric. 20170708_201334 Thoughts:  The floral ity ones were my favorite shorts pattern until the M4M Mila came along.  Now I have a love affair with that pattern; but these palazzos still hold a place in my heart and I still wear my floral ones often  This pattern turns out shorts that are super comfy to wear and super fast to make.  Sometimes I can fit the pattern pieces onto scraps of fabric leftover from other patterns, win – win!  Its a stellar pattern. Made before: green/black plaid shorts in 2017, teal shorts in 2017, and black shorts in 2017, and aztec blue pants in Feb 2020 Happy Sewing! Kristin

Jalie 2445 with an Ottobre Tank & Jalie 3355

Another catch up post.

Way back in May 2017 I made this Black and White “love graffiti fabric” set. Technically I made the tank in Aug 2016 and then added the shorts to match in May 2017. In the last 4 years I have worn then tons (the fabric is fading) and love the set.  Sadly I never got around to blogging the details.

(photos from before surgery)

As my weight fluctuates I have to send them to the “too small” or “too large” bin from time to time but I never get rid of the set.

They fit awesome and feel great when I wear them. I don’t often wear sets and I really like these together.

The shorts are Jalie 2445; back in 2017 I was an entirely different size than I am now. I made a straight size X for some reason.  Normally I size up for my hips. But who knows what fitting book I was reading and what method I was giving a try.

So I made a straight size X with a ton of alterations.  On the backs I took 5/8” off the outer waist and 1/4” at center waist.  I added 1/2” to the outer hip but took away 1/2” on the butt scoop.  I then added 2.5” to the hem.

The fabric I used is: “Love Graffiti Jersey Knit”  Cotton/Lycra from Fashionfabricsclub.  I picked it up in Nov 2015 for $5.25 per yard.  It’s a fun fabric but washes terribly.  It fades a ton. It has horrible recovery. But, it is soft.

2017 b&w love set, jalie shorts, p4p or otto tank 2

I love the waistband on these things. The method to put the waist in keeps it all nice and straight and no rolling. There is zigzag stitching along the inside top that keeps it all nice and in place.

2017 b&w love set, jalie shorts, p4p or otto tank 5

Pulling these out of the saved bin is like pulling out a favorite, loved blanket. Soft and comforting.  They are going on 5 years of wear now, I consider them a definite win.

I also have made these shorts for Miss K 2 times before; she didn’t wear them much because she is just not a shorts girl.  But they turned out cute anyway.

This is Ottobre 02/2007 #1 “Tank Top” and I made it once before this one, but wasn’t happy with it (back then I wanted more tight fitting clothing and as time has gone on I would much prefer the looser fit of both these tank).  This one is a size 42 graded to a 46 at the hip. This time I slimmed up the sides a bit but it was still loose. The fabric was the same “Love” graffiti as above.

And I can’t believe I never shared THIS make on my blog.

2017 oct 11 jalie 3355 for K 2

It’s Jalie 3355 which I’ve made a bazillion (9) times now. I made this one Oct 2017 and Miss K loved it for a short time.

2017 oct 11 jalie 3355 for K 1

It was an expensive make. She felt it brought too much attention to her when she wore it to school and with her being shy, she decided after a few wears, to not wear it anymore.

2017 oct 11 jalie 3355 for K 4

I still have it, hanging in my closet. It was too expensive and too good to give away. Maybe someday I can squeeze into it when my weight fluxes again.

2017 oct 11 jalie 3355 for K 3

I made this in a straight size U, adding 1” to the cuffs and hem band widths.  This is up a few sizes for Miss K. But I wanted it to fit for awhile because it was such an expensive make.

2017 oct 11 jalie 3355 for K 5a

The fabric is absolutely amazing. It is Saoirse (SheerSha) from the movie The Song of the Sea. One of my all time favorite movies.

The fabric on the sleeves, hood, and back is called Selkie love; 2 yards cotton lycra; $44 (YIKES!! It was $22/yard). The front panel is called Selkie panel and was $8

SO Total for the hoodie was $52  not including the blue bands and inner hood lining……. I’m a very frugal person and this just hurts me to pay for this amount of fabric.

But, it was a rare occasion and Miss K wanted it so bad.

I got the fabric from Wanderlust custom fabric on Facebook.  I have always gotten awesome, quality custom fabrics from there.

Clothes for the girl

I had a relatively uneventful procedure last week and am pretty much recovered.  I wanted to thank you for your kind comments on my last post.  I have the results already but do not meet with my doctor for 2 weeks to discuss.

So, Miss K hit a decent growth spurt recently and needed some new clothes.  I’m trying to bribe her to take pictures so we will see how many of my makes I can get photographed.  Here are the first 5 things I made her.

combo 1

First up is Jalie 3355 Hoodie
I used size Q for the shoulders/bust/height and size R from the waist down.  This is 1 size up from her measurements because last time I made this hoodie it just fit and I wanted a little growing room added in.

combo 2

I’ve made this hoodie for her before: January 2015 I made K a polka dot hoodie;  March 2015 I made her a pac man one  and also a teal hippie bus one. This hoodie is the perfect pattern and I’ve even made it for myself in purple and tie dye.

combo 4

The instructions are fantastic, but all Jalie ones are.  I am such a visual person so the written steps are nice but the pictures steps are what really help me.

combo 6

Fabric: 1.5 yards of red sweatshirt fleece.  “hearts on red”  I picked this up in February 2015 for $4.50 a yard.  I wish I had bought more!  Do you ever get fabric that you wish you had just bought a whole bolt of?  Anyway, I also used some navy cotton lycra scraps.  Hoodie total cost was $6.75

combo 9

Next time:  I think I will take 1” out of the overall height because with the band that you can’t always see in these pictures, this hoodie is a bit long on K.  She likes to wear it but asked for it to be shorter next time.  She also asked to have a kitty heart put on the front with my silhouette machine.

(here is before Kitty heart was added)
combo 11

The pants she is wearing here are Ottobre 01/2009 #29 Saija Sweatpants.  These pants are no stranger to this blog.  This is her favorite pants pattern.  I think if I counted right this is the 10th and 11th pair I’ve made for her.

blue pant 2

combo 7

I used size 152, reduced the front rise by 1” and shortened by 1” in length.  I use 1.5” wide elastic inside the yoga waistband to help hold them up.

combo 3

Fabric: Dark Navy Blue Jersey Knit, cotton lycra.  This fabric is super nice and beefy at 11oz in weight. It was a dream to sew and it feels so nice in hand.  I purchased this in March and used 1 yard for $3.95.

combo 5

combo 8

I sewed her up another pair in a light french terry.  It is a Ruby Two Tone French Terry Fabric and made of 87% Polyester 9% Rayon 4% Spandex.  This fabric is so super soft I knew K would like it.

combo 12

She actually didn’t like them at first – hated the heathered look of the fabric – but now has come around and likes them. I picked this up in Nov 2015 for $7.40 for the yard.

combo 13

With the leftover 1/2 yard of sweatshirt fabric from the hoodie I decided to try a shorts pattern out for K. This is Jalie 2445.  I used size R on the shorts and Q for the rise/height.  They turned out really cute but also really, really short.  K uses them for bedtime because she’s a hot sleeper.  Shorts: $2.25

combo 10

I made this pattern a second time in Lilac Purple Cotton Spandex Knit.  Same R sizing and Q for the rise.  I added 1/4” to the side seams though to give K’s hips more room.  I added 1/2” full butt adjustment and 3” to the length of the legs.  These are just ok.  They fit nice on the hips and nothing is wrong with them, K just doesn’t prefer them.  These are pajama shorts now too.  I picked up this fabric in August 2015. Cost of shorts: $3.25

20160413_185955

In summary, K received 2 pairs of pants, 2 pairs of shorts, and a hoodie for $23.60 total.

If you follow me on Instagram you have seen that I am almost finished with a Maxi dress for me.  It is turning out nicely!  I’m also working on a tank for me as well as K.  I have started putting together my summer “want to sew” list.  Have you started your summer sewing yet?
