Me Made May 2017 (MMM17)

Well,
It's that time again. Me Made May.

Sometimes I dread it, sometimes I'm excited.  Other times I'm both!

 'I, Kristin @ SunnySewing (www.sunnysewing.blogspot.com)(instagram @kristinsunnysewing), sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '17. I endeavour to wear handmade 5 of 7 days of the week for the duration of May 2017'  This year I also want to pledge to wear skirts or dresses 3 of the 5 of the 7 days :)  I rarely wear dresses or skirts so this is huge for me; it will push me out of my comfort zone for sure!

I'll try to IG each day and do a weekly blog post on my wears/makes.  I also want to pull out makes I haven't worn in a while to see what I like about them, what I don't, and what I can change about it for the future.  I really want to focus on having things in my closet I love to wear, they feel good to wear, and that I actually wear them!

Tanks, Shorts, Top, Leggings

So, I don’t always sew Patterns for Pirates… but I do sew them a lot. Here's a few of my recent makes.

These patterns are the Essential Tank, the Palazzo Pants (as shorts), and the PegLegs.  I must say I love all these patterns.



Essential Tank is the perfect tank.  It is fitted at the bust but then has this nice flare toward the hips.  Pear-shaped gals rejoice - this is a hip friendly pattern.  There is a perfect amount of looseness over the stomach and hips so that I’m totally comfortable.  I made this for pajamas but it would work for out of the house too.



Size: L sloping out to an XL at the hips.  This is exactly my measurements. P4P patterns give you a ton of options.  I used Shirt Length, Straight Hem, Knit Tee Binding, and Straight Straps.  They also offer dress, tunic, and maxi length as well as curved hem or back slit, and racer back straps.  I plan on making many more.



Fabric: super soft double brushed polyester.  If you haven’t tried dbp you are truly missing out – it is heavenly soft.  I know fabric.com has some but I purchased this from knitpop sometime in Oct or Nov. It was from an auction box so it was $5.70 a yard.  I used 1 yard of the Black for the tank.  The trim is green plaid double brushed polyester from knitpop as well.

Palazzo Pants:
Size L at the waist to XL hips down.  I also scooped out 1/2” from the back butt curve. They are a little bit loose on me so I would size down next time. 


Fabric: Green Plaid Double brushed Polyester from Knitpop in Oct or Nov.  $5.70 for the 1 yard. Waistband is the black double brushed poly from knitpop as well.



PegLegs:  These are my favorite peglegs so far.  I’ve only made 3 pair but these are so fun!  I made them quite awhile ago and never had anything to wear on top with them.  I really didn’t think to pair it with my essential tank of the same fabric but when I did these pictures I finally realized they went together.  And I love them together!  However, I already made a different top to go with them.
 


Size: 1XL.  Double brushed poly is so soft and I didn't want them to be too tight; normally I sew these pegs in an XL but sized up and I’m glad I did, they are perfect. 

Fabric: Green Plaid Double brushed Polyester from Knitpop in Oct or Nov.  $5.70 for the 1 yard.



Laundry Day Tee by Love Notions
I made is tee to go with my plaid pegs.  I’m glad I did, it is super comfortable and loose but not too loose. The pattern is free if you join their Facebook group.



Size: M for shoulders and bust, L for waist to hip.  I ended up taking an additional 1/2” off each side by the bust.  I think I would size down next time to a S for shoulders to bust and M for waist to hip. 



Fabric:  This is a mystery fabric I got in a mystery scrap box from Knitpop.  It was a yard and a half and I paid about $5 for it? I would guess, I’m not totally sure here.  It’s brushed on one side and slightly shiny on the other.  I would guess it’s a form of polyester.   It feels good and wears well. 

I’m almost caught up with posting my backlog of makes.  (almost).

A Quilt for K

 I started a quilt for Miss K last year.  I’ve never quilted before.  It doesn’t really interest me the way sewing clothing does.  I prefer instant gratification and quilts take for-ev-er.

So I started K’s quilt in February of 2016.  I finished the top quite fast and was so pleased with myself.  And then the top sat and sat and sat.  Miss K begged me to finish it, then harassed me, and finally pleaded with me. 

So this year March I decided to finish it. 

*It has to hang sideways on the clothes line to fit*








*The Quilt pattern is free on RileyBlakeDesigns.com; This one is called “Free To Dream” by Lori Whitlock.  When I started the quilt Miss K had a queen bed.  By the time I went to finish it she had a twin bed so I decided to leave off the borders to make the quilt smaller.










*There are some of my favorite fabrics in this quilt by Riley Blake.  I have parts of “Saltwater” in here “Modern Minis,” “Vintage Market,” and “Little Red Riding Hood.” Tasha Noel is one of my favorite fabric designers.



*I decided on a simple diagonal quilted pattern*  The backing fabric matches her walls perfectly! And it wasn't even planned!







I love how it turned out.  Miss K loves it to pieces which makes it even better. 

I still find quilting boring and time consuming; however I love the end result.  I’ve already started another quilt for the Living room.  Let’s hope it takes me less than a year to complete!

Sewing for others ~ Jalie and Swoon

This year I wanted to make something special for my Mom for her Birthday.
She liked my Jalie scarf neck top so I made her one for  herself.  I also made her a Swoon Cardigan.

I won’t divulge my mom’s measurements on her but I will say that she is short-waisted.  This alteration was different for me because I’m rather long waisted. 



You probably recognize the fabric from my Burda shirt the other day.  When I pulled it out my daughter said “That looks like something grandma would like.”  Luckily I had enough to make both her shirt and mine.  I did sew hers first just to be safe. 



I’ve made this pattern for myself 3 times now.  I love it.  Sewing it up is a breeze. 

Swoon Cardigan



I picked this cardigan because I loved the princess seaming.  I’ve never sewn it before. I didn’t like the front with the asymmetrical peaks – so I made it straight across in front.



I didn’t like this pattern, the instructions, any of it  Piecing the pattern together was weird how there one long part of the main body that is cut off and on a different part – I don’t know. I didn’t like it and thought it was weird.  The sewing part was ok but I didn’t enjoy it.  The collar part is single fabric, I wish it was double to hide the seam.  The two seams joining at the bottom are not a good feature.  The corners at the front have to be mitered to look right.  Ugh. not my favorite.  It looks nice, and I like how it turned out. But I’ll not be sewing this again.



Fabric: initially I had this pegged to be my Jalie drop pocket cardigan for my swap. However, it looked so nice with this fabric and it is colors my mom would like.  2 yards Teal Blue Jersey Knit, 95% Rayon 5% Lycra.  It is soft and drapes well.  I purchased it in August 2016 from fashion fabrics club.

I sure hope my Mom enjoyed receiving these as her present.

Sewing With a Plan ~ Burda and Jalie

Sewing TNT’s really gives you a boost of confidence in your sewing.  

Burda 10/2014 #103

I’ve made this top 5 times now; It’s one of my favorites.



1. Color-Blocked 2. Aqua Tank 3. Rib Floral 4. Gray Contrast

Size: straight 42



Alterations:

• no hem added, it’s long enough. 
• sloped 1” out of back neck and tapered to nothing at back hem. 
• Added 1.25” to back at hip level.
• Lowered sleeve cap by 1/2” and added 1/4” to each side of sleeve.

Fabric: 1 yard Jewel Print ITY Knit from Maggy London; 95% polyester, 5% lycra; purchased in Nov 2015 from FabricMart with my Fabricista Challenge winnings. It was free for me but listed at $5/yard.

In January we added this little guy to our family. It’s so fun to watch a puppy learn things.

Jalie 3248 Drop Pocket Cardigan

Size: W graded to an AA at the hip.





Alterations: none



Fabric: 2 yards Black French Terry (506-BLACK) purchased in Aug 2016 for $12.90 from Stylish Fabrics.  It’s very soft, not too thick and not too thin.



I love this drop pocket design, plus there are double front pieces so they act as a full facing.  There aren’t many seams visible on this cardigan either – just the sides and sleeves.



I've made this cardi 2 other times. Once in a soft, thin Gray knit for me; and another time in a teal knit for Miss K (unblogged at this time).  The more times I sew it the easier the instructions become.
