The first muslin I wanted to tackle was my Thurlow shorts. I've got them where I'm mostly pleased, but have an issue in the back that I can't seem to fix. Please help!
(oh, and excuse the striped underwear)
Front view. Looks good - I have one leg higher than the other to test what I like better
(the right, my left is the winner)
Side view - I know my seam line is tilting toward the front - sigh. I am sure this is due to my protruding upper thighs. But this is something I can live with
Back view I'm happy with - and impressed I got this clear of a picture while twisting!
Herein lies the problem. Under my butt cheek there is a poof of fabric. See the following pictures
Most of my shorts come in like this to hug the cheek better...
But these fall flat, straight off my butt. How do I get them to taper in more? I tried a dart on the back leg - no luck. I tried taking in the side seams more - no luck.
One last front view
Any advice on how to get rid of that excess fabric without messing up the rest of the short bottoms? Or am I just being too picky here? Help! and Thanks in advance :D

I personally would not worry about that. I think it's a styling feature of those shorts -- they're not toosh-huggers. And the muslin looks really good on you, I think.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I have no idea how to fix that issue. But I think you'd be perfectly fine as is!
Thanks Aleksandra!
DeleteI had a look on google images at other Thurlows and I thought that when the shorts were left longer they hang like yours and when cropped they look a lot more fitted in the area you feel you have excess fabric. Have a look and see if you agree! Anyway if you want the length my feeling is they are fine less fitted.
ReplyDeleteThanks Philippa! I went and googled them and I feel much better about it now :)
DeleteWow, these look fantastic! You really have achieved a great fit. I don't know what you could do about the other fitting issue, but I think it looks fine really. I agree with Philippa. I have some RTW bermuda length shorts and they are like that, but the shorter the shorts, then they appear more fitted. Maybe the way around that would be with a stretch woven?
ReplyDeleteThanks Shirley! I really, really need shorts so I am persistent with these ;-) I think a stretch woven might be the answer - thanks!
DeletePersonally, I think they look great as is. Don't most shorts legs hang straight down? I guess I'll have to start observing more closely! But, really, the fit looks excellent.
ReplyDeletelol, I was trying to watch when I went grocery shopping last week. I'm sure people thought I was crazy. I have a pair, but they are jeans, that I love the fit on the back of them. Then again, jeans have stretch so that is probably why! Thanks Joy!
DeleteJust from the picture I would also say that the shorter side looks more fitted than the longer one. I'm very impressed that you are working on five muslin sat the same time! Keep going!
ReplyDeleteThanks Daniela - when inspiration hits, I run with it!
DeleteI don't have anything helpful to say but I can't wait to see what you figure out! I'm still searching for that perfect shorts pattern. I like the Maritime shorts but it's still not exactly what I want if you know what I mean.;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Cindy! I wish I could just search "perfect shorts pattern" and have it fit me as such. :) LOL
